Beowulf
wins weekend box office in USA (27,51 million) and the rest of the
world (17,30 million) |
|
In the widest test yet for the latest wave in
3-D cinema, the sword-and-sandals fantasy “Beowulf”
got off to a promising — but not eye-popping — start
at the box office over the weekend.
Director
Robert Zemeckis’ digitally animated epic, adapted from the
classic Old English poem about a hero battling three generations
of bizarre demons, met industry expectations by grossing $27.5 million
in the United States and Canada.
Pulling
in twice as much per screen at 3-D locations as at regular theatres,
the heavily marketed film ranked No. 1 for the weekend, far ahead
of the computer-animated comedy “Bee Movie” and the
crime thriller “American Gangster.”Only
about 20 percent of the auditoriums showing “Beowulf”
were equipped with 3-D, but they accounted for 40 percent of the
grosses, Moore said.
Half
the opening-weekend ticket buyers were older than 25 and three-fifths
were male, Paramount said. Although pre-release “tracking”
polls had indicated scant interest among older females, Moore said
the crowd was “reasonably” balanced for a movie in the
action genre.
|
|
Because
of its hefty cost, including tens of millions in marketing, the
movie will need to hold up well domestically and roll out strongly
overseas to be considered a financial success.
“Beowulf”
got off to a decent start abroad, grossing an estimated $17 million
from 13 countries outside the United States and Canada, according
to Warner Bros.
The
movie opened No. 1 or No. 2 in most territories and fared especially
well in Britain, where it took in $4.4 million, and South Korea,
where it racked up $3.7 million.
In
the United States and Canada, the movie played in 3-D at 742 of
its 3,153 theaters. It was the first to be shown in three different
3-D formats from rivals Real D, IMAX and new competitor Dolby Laboratories.
“Beowulf”
averaged some $43,000 per theater at locations with giant-screen
IMAX 3-D systems.
At
locations equipped with technology from Beverly Hills-based Real
D, whose 3-D systems are the most widely used, it averaged $13,000
per theater. (No estimates were available from Dolby, whose systems
were deployed at a smaller number of theaters.)
At
venues without 3-D screens, by comparison, the movie averaged about
$7,000.
Faced with essentially flat attendance since the modern-day peak
in 2002, theater owners have scrambled to install 3-D technology,
which is costly up front but enables them to charge ticket premiums
of $2 or more.

Beowulf Sets New IMAX Record
IMAX
Corporation today announced that "Beowulf: An IMAX 3D Experience"
contributed a record-setting $3.58 million of the $27.5 million
that the film grossed at the domestic box office through its opening
weekend. The IMAX® 3D release played on 84 domestic IMAX screens
and registered 13 percent of the film's overall box office on less
than two percent of the total screens. This performance marks the
highest percentage box office contribution to a Hollywood film's
total opening weekend performance in IMAX's history. The IMAX per
screen average through the three day weekend was $42,625.
"The
weekend performance of 'Beowulf' in IMAX® theatres confirms
that 3D is very good for IMAX, regardless of the other options available
to consumers," said IMAX Co-Chairmen and Co-CEOs Richard L.
Gelfond and Bradley J. Wechsler. "As 3D increasingly becomes
top of mind with Hollywood filmmakers and studios, we believe IMAX
will remain at the forefront - offering an unrivaled 3D experience
that resonates with film critics, audiences and exhibitors."
Many
IMAX theatres reported sold-out shows throughout the weekend, with
several adding 2:00 a.m. screenings to meet audience demand. The
film also performed well internationally, grossing an estimated
$660,000 from 13 IMAX screens. Another 21 international IMAX engagements
will open next week, followed by 7 more in the coming weeks.
"'Beowulf'
in IMAX 3D has tapped into a wide audience, including the elusive
tech-savvy 15 - 30 year-old demographic. Based on these early results,
we are enthusiastic about the strong word of mouth and the film's
potential legs in IMAX - particularly as we head into the holiday
and heavy movie-going week ahead," said Greg Foster, Chairman
and President of IMAX Filmed Entertainment. "Our partners at
Paramount Pictures, Shangri-La Entertainment Warner Bros. Pictures,
and Robert Zemeckis have delivered a movie that is ideally suited
to IMAX 3D, and we're gratified moviegoers clearly agree."

segment for the film HAZE, presented by the foundation to raise
awareness and a passion to solve this national issue. The film will
be released in the first quarter of 2008.

accepting this Honorary Chairperson position,” said Michael
B. Lanahan, President of The Gordie Foundation Board of Directors.
“There are 1,700 student deaths per year and close to 100,000

New
details for upcoming documentary directed by Robin Wright Penn |
Robin
Wright Penn may have been born in Dallas but she was raised in surf
country -- San Diego. So it's no surprise that her directoral debut
will be an upcoming documentary about female surfers.
"I grew up in La Jolla, near San Diego, and my friend said,
'Hey do you want to narrate my friend's documentary on the three
top female surfers?' They have very different personal lives and
how they all sort of had their dream -- to have the fame, to have
the financing, to survive, 'cause a lot of them are homeless or
have to take care of sick, dying parents or whatever. And that kind
of competition with men. And how they get paid half. And I said,
'Yeah, I'll narrate it.' And I suddenly became the producer. And
then I became the director."
Wright Penn says the documentary is more about the women's perspective
than about riding the waves.
"What is that evolution of fame? What does it do to you
and your dream? And does it kill the dream? And they're all mothers.
What does the circuit do to your psyche. And how does kill your
endeavour?" |
