Premiere of "Sorry, Haters" in AFI FILM FESTIVAL
November 7, 2005 AFI FEST 2005 celebrated another night of star-studded premieres and parties. At a post-screening Q&A for writer/director Jeff Stanzler's SORRY, HATERS--which enjoyed its US Premiere at the Festival--audience member Jack Nicholson peppered the filmmaker with questions about the movie's roots in the events of September 11 and the "growing madness" in the world...
Star Robin Wright Penn, meanwhile, good-naturedly admitted that she and Stanzler often disagreed about whether or not her character was at all sympathetic (he was a yes, she says no)...
After the screening, the Penns, Nicholson, Harry Dean Stanton and others enjoyed a private party at the Cabana Club.

Robin Wright Penn Defends her husband Sean in Toronto Film Festival

For jaded journalists who ridiculed Sean Penn's rescue mission last week in New Orleans, his wife has a salty message.
"To them, I say 'Fuck you!'" Robin Wright Penn told me yesterday at the Toronto International Film Festival, where she was hawking a very peculiar indie movie, "Sorry, Haters," in which she stars as a deranged but beautiful rap video channel employee who's seeking post-9/11 vengeance against a Syrian taxi driver.

"I think it's fucking pathetic to be belittling him," Wright Penn raged - a blond, blue-eyed lioness protecting her mate (who was on hand for Friday's premiere, sitting with his spouse in the back row and well-positioned to gauge the expressions on the faces of a few audience members who walked out of the film early).

The 39-year-old actress was responding to news accounts of her husband's trip - to help children stranded by Hurricane Katrina - that said his boat sprang a leak and began sinking under the weight of his huge celebrity entourage (including pop historian Douglas Brinkley), and that the motor wouldn't start and regular citizens taunted him.

"Do we have to go to the bowels of infantile behavior?" she demanded. "Here people are dying, and if it wasn't Sean Penn going crazy watching CNN and saying, 'I have to do something' - but instead it was 'Joe Smith from Morgan City' - then those people would be thanking him, not attacking him."

God help the gossip columnist who won't say the woman has a point. As for her character in the movie - a needy, manipulative psychopath who hates herself a helluva lot and everyone else even more - Wright Penn giggled and quipped, "Kinda like most women!"

Like all the hundreds of Hollywood types who've come to Canada for the prestigious 10-day festival, Wright Penn was at her ingratiating best - "selling, selling, selling," she told me - in hopes of snagging a commercial distributor and maybe even a positive blurb or two.

08/19/2005 Robin Wright, Angelina Jolie, Anthony Hopkins, Alison Lohman in "Beowulf"
Warner Bros. Pictures and Paramount Pictures are coming together to share the load on "Beowulf," the new performance-capture epic from Robert Zemeckis.
According to the industry trades, Steve Bing's Shangri-La Entertainment is financing the film, which will then be released and distributed by the two studios in 2007.
The film's eclectic and international cast includes Brendan Gleeson, John Malkovich, Alison Lohman, Robin Wright Penn, Anthony Hopkins, the immortal Crispin Glover, Angelina Jolie and, in the title role, Ray Winstone.
Roger Avary ("Pulp Fiction") and Neil Gaiman ("MirrorMask") are adapting the epic poem, which focuses on a brave hero who protects the Danes against the monstrous Grendel. Glover is playing Grendel, reuniting with his "Back to the Future" director. Jolie plays the beast's mother, a bit like she did in Oliver Stone's "Alexander."
"Beowulf" was originally set up at Sony, but that commitment seems to have fallen through with Paramount handling domestic distribution and Warners doing international chores. The film, produced by Zemeckis, along with Steve Starkey and Jack Rapke of ImageMovers, will utilize the next generation of the performance capture technology that Zemeckis utilized on 2004's "The Polar Express.

"Nine Lives" and Robin Wright win at Locarno Film Festival
The United States film Nine Lives, by Rodrigo Garcia, has won this year's Golden Leopard for the best film at the Locarno Film Festival.
The film, which features big names such as Glenn Close and Holly Hunter, explores the lives of nine very different women in separate but loosely connected vignettes.
Nine Lives also received the best actress award, to be shared among the nine principal actresses in the film. In addition to Close and Hunter, this included Robin Wright Penn and Sissy Spacek.
The president of the international competition jury, Vittorio Storaro, praised the film's dramatic and stylistic qualities, adding that Garcia was a director with vision.
"Rodrigo Garcia's direction was extraordinary, he really did what a director should be doing, directing," said Storaro.
Accepting his Golden Leopard to enthusiastic applause at the award ceremony on Saturday night, Garcia thanked the jury and festival for his prize.
He also thanked his producers, the director of photography and finally his cast, "without whom this film couldn't exist".

The film gives a 12-minute glimpse into the lives of the nine women, often at emotional turning points which are not always resolved. The characters often reappear in the other snap-shots in secondary roles.
Each woman appears to be faced with a dilemma Diana, played by Wright Penn, is confronted with a former lover just as she has got over him. Sonia (Hunter) is embarrassed as her boyfriend reveals the couple's intimate secrets to their close friends.
Despite the presence of well-known actresses, the film was made on a small budget and filmed in just 18 days.
It had however been considered one the most prominent entries in the international competition, which this year featured 17 films from 12 countries
