Plot
A story about the intricacies of small town, blue-collar American life, centered around the misadventures of one, Miles Roby (ED HARRIS), manager of the Empire Grill. Trapped within the confines of Empire Falls, Maine since the death of his mother (ROBIN WRIGHT PENN), Miles has been unable to sever his many ties to his delapidated hometown, including his reformed brother (AIDAN QUINN), his lay-about father (PAUL NEWMAN), his soon-to-be-ex-wife (HELEN HUNT), and their intelligent, if awkward daughter, Tick (DANIELLE PANABAKER). Not long before his ex's remarriage to an unctuous health club owner, Miles comes upon evidence of a long-ago affair between his mother and a mystery man (PHILIP SEYMOUR HOFFMAN) and realizes how it all leads back to Francine Whiting (JOANNE WOODWARD), the woman who runs everything in Empire Falls, including Miles
